Dr. Timothy Murphy, IARPA Deputy Director

Dr. Timothy Murphy was named Deputy Director of the DNI Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity in March 2007, and appointed Acting IARPA Director on 27 June 2007, and resumed his position as Deputy Director on 4 February 2008. Dr. Murphy came to this assignment from the position of Deputy Chief Scientist for the Central Intelligence Agency and Deputy Director of the Intelligence Technology Innovation Center, where he had served since February 2004.

Prior to joining the CIA, Dr. Murphy served as the Nonproliferation Research and Development Program Manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). During his 20-year career at LANL, Dr. Murphy worked on high-power microwave systems, nuclear weapons effects, nuclear explosion detection techniques, and spectrally resolved remote sensing. He was the Chief Scientist for the DOE/LANL Blackbeard and FORTE satellite projects, launched in 1993 and 1997, respectively. He served as an advisor to the US delegation and Conference on Disarmament during the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) negotiations, and was a principal architect of the CTBT monitoring system. From 1996 to 1999, Dr. Murphy was detailed to the Arms Control Intelligence Staff where he was actively involved in several intercommunity and interagency issues. Upon his return to LANL, Dr. Murphy served as the technical lead for a project on hyperspectral remote sensing before becoming the program manager for the NNSA-sponsored Nonproliferation Science and Technology R&D program at the laboratory.

Dr. Murphy received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Stanford University in 1976, and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1978 and 1981, respectively. He was a Research Scholar at the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies from 1981 through 1984.

Dr. Murphy was awarded the Intelligence Commendation Medal in 1999. He has also received three LANL Distinguished Performance Awards, a National Nuclear Security Agency Recognition for Superior Accomplishment, and several DCI Exceptional Performance Awards.
